Summer won’t be the same for the faithful in Point Abino, thanks to COVID-19.

Trustees of the Holloway Memorial Chapel have announced that operations — including weekly church services, wedding bookings its annual strawberry festival have all been postponed — or in the case of the strawberry festival scheduled for June 24, been cancelled outright. The 12-week summer worship services were scheduled for June 21 through Sept. 6.

“We have made the decision with great reluctance because worship Is at the heart of our life together at the chapel’s inter-denominational Sunday services, but the board of trustees believe that this is the responsible decision,” the chapel trustees said in a release announcing the move. “We prefer to be cautious with the health of our congregation and not encourage people to take unnecessary risks.”

The board said it would continue to monitor the situation re-evaluate the decision to suspend operations “in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Government of Canada guidelines as they evolve.”

The suspension will mark a time that is in stark contrast to the 2019 season when the chapel marked its 125th anniversary with a series of events including one which brought couples who had been married at the chapel back to Point Abino for a celebration.

The chapel was established in 1894 — predating the Point Abino’s landmark lighthouse by 21 years — by Harriet Holloway Stafford and James B. Stafford in memory of Mrs. Stafford’s parents, Isaac and Mary Ann Holloway. The Holloway family and descendants have remained longtime residents of the area.

The chapel welcomes people of all faiths. For more information on services and special events, visit www.hollowaymemorialchapel.org.
